5 Photoshoot Myths That Need to Go

October 11, 2025

There are so many misconceptions about what a photoshoot "Should" look like. As a photographer, I hear it all the time: people stressing about posing perfectly, needing fancy outfits, or thinking they're not "photogenic enough."

So let's clear a few things up. Here are  five of the biggest photoshoot myths I hear (and what's actually true.)

Myth #1 "I'm Not Photogenic"

Truth: Everyone can look amazing in photos; it's all about comfort, not perfection.

If you've ever thought you don't photograph well, you probably just haven't had a photographer who helped you relax. A photographer's job isn't to fit you into a pose; it's to capture you when you're being you.

The best photos always happen in the unplanned moments, when you're laughing, moving, or just forgetting the camera is even there.

Myth #2: You need an Expensive Outfit

You really don't. Some of the most stunning photos I've ever taken were in simple jeans and a t-shirt.

It's not about what you wear, it's about how you feel in it. If you're comfortable and confident, that energy shows through every photo. If you're unsure, ask your photographer to help plan outfits that fit the vibe and location. No shopping spree required.

Myth #3: You need an Expensive Outfit

You really don't. Some of the most stunning photos I've ever taken were in simple jeans and a t-shirt.

It's not about what you wear, it's about how you feel in it. If you're comfortable and confident, that energy shows through every photo. If you're unsure, ask your photographer to help plan outfits that fit the vibe and location. No shopping spree required.

Myth #4: All Photoshoots Have to Be Perfectly Posed

Nope. Some of the best photos are the messy, real ones, wind in your hair, someone cracking up mid pose, a little motion blur. Those are the photos that feel alive.

If you're too focused on posing "right," you'll miss the emotion that makes a photo timeless. Your photographer will always give you direction, but also leave room for movement and personality. That's where the magic happens.

Myth #5: Photoshoots Take Forever

They don't have to! You can get beautiful, natural images in a short session. Mini sessions, branding shoots, or quick creative sets can still tell your story without needing hours of shooting.

The key is planning and communication; if you plan the vibe ahead of time, even a 30-minute session can deliver a gallery full of personality.

A photoshoot doesn't have to be intimidating or "perfect". It's about connection, comfort, and creativity. If you've been putting off booking because of one of these myths, take this as your sign. You're ready, you don't need to change a thing.
